I got an allotment last year and dug four plots planning to rotate potatoes/ roots/ legumes/ brassicas but to be honest, I don't intend planting any legumes other than runner beans so the rest of the plot would be wasted space. Can I just have a three plot rotation: Potatoes/ roots/ brassicas? Would this work or not? Would it cause more problems than it solves?

It need not be wasted space - you can plant onions, garlic, shallots, leeks, courgettes, spinach, sweetcorn, Swiss chard or salads in your legume plot.

Would be a shame not to use it as you've already dug it...

If you want to use all four beds I use the fourth bed to experiment and salad crops.

Thanks for advice. Just wondered whether a three bed rotation would work.

    Sorry, didn't answer the question.

How about this from Bob Flowerdew:

"I try and work a minimum of a three year rotation..... But it really doesn't matter, just make sure you never have the same plants in the same place two years running."

Should work then smiley - ok!

Yes, a three bed rotation would work according to 'The New Vegetable & Herb Expert' by Dr. D. G. Hessayon.
The rotation is split into three groups: Roots, Brassicas and Others.

There are a few surprising vegetables to a couple of the groups, so written below is straight from the book.

    ROOTS
beetroot, carrot, chicory, jerusalem artichoke, parsnip, potato, salsify, scorzonera.

    BRASSICAS
broccoli, brussels sprout, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, kohl rabi, radish, swede, turnip.

    OTHERS
aubergine, bean, capsicum, celeriac, celery, cucumber, endive, leaf beet, leek, lettuce, marrow, onion, pea, spinach, sweet corn, tomato.

    smiley - smiley
