I would like to get an apple tree for my allotment but I'm baffled by the choices... I've looked at lists from some of the big nurseries but they're exhaustive and I could use anyone with some straight advice.
Can anyone recommend a self-pollinating culinary apple tree that overall ticks the boxes on flavour, yield, disease-resistance, etc?
Many thanks.
Hi jon
Have you thought about two and sometimes three different varieties on the same tree. There are a lot of them around now. You can get apples, cherries, pear, plum. That may solve your problem.

Hi,
Thanks for that, but can you please tell me more? I've never heard of this, is there a name for this type of tree, and does it therefore mean that it is self-pollinating? Thanks.

Hi Jon
Replied to this once, must of pressed wrong button.
More info for you.You can get at least four different fruit types. They are known as duals, but you can get some with three known as tripples.
Basicly they take in this example, an apple rootstock and graft two different types of apple on to it. One would be a dessert and the other a cooker. So you could have a golden delicious and a granny smith on the same tree. They pollinate each other.Plums could be one yellow and one purple.
Pears say conference and williams von cheriton.Cherries say early rivers and van.Best part is they only cost about a tenner each. You have to be carefull when pruning in case you cut out one of the grafts.
Need anymore let me know

Thanks Lance, that's very interesting, didn't know you could get them like this... I hope you don't mind me wracking your brains further, but I've had a look on the Keepers Nursery website who have a large selection of apple trees, and I can't find anything with relation to dual apple trees. Does this mean that I would have to graft them myself? I wouldn't know where to start, I'm very amateur, do you know if I could buy one already done? Many thanks for any info.
Hi Jon
Put the knife away. They are already waiting for you.

Thanks ever so much Lance! Definitely something I'm going to look into. :0)
Cheers Jon
On a slightly different angle, I am choosing ornamentals for my new garden, and last night read one of my manuals that Malus Golden Hornet is not only very disease resistant (canker etc) but is also "a universal pollinator" for other apples. Not being well up on fruit can I assume that this means Golden Hornet flowers over a period that covers most apple varieties? If so it would be a good ornamental to choose in anticipation of when I get round to planting culinary varieties.
Hi goldilocks
Yes you are correct golden hornet is sometimes planted near to other apple trees. Flowers for about the same period as apple The beauty of it is the huge display of white flowers that has a high pollen count and so will fertilise other nearby apples

Many thanks. It's on my list now!
And mine! Didn't even know I wanted one until you started talking about them!!!

Malus 'Golden Hornet'
Where is a reasonable place to obtain one? What is the mature height and spread? Does it require any special cultural conditions?

Hi Toady
You should be able to get one quite easily, garden centres, mail order ect.
Will grow in almost any soil, sun or part shade and is very hardy.White flowers in may that are self polonating. The fruit stays on the tree for a long time, and does not drop off like apples. You can use the fruit to make crab apple jelly, wine or leave them for the birds.Average size would be around 15ft but over a long period of time could be 25ft or more.A tree really worth getting.
