I've decided to grow some gooseberries, but am not sure about the best type to grow. I want to use them in cooking. Does anyone know which type are best ?
'Careless' is the best-known one for cooking, and most easily available, but - going through a couple of books here - Geoff Hamilton reckoned that 'Jubilee' (an improved form of 'Careless') and 'Invicta' (immune to American mildew) were the best of the culinary gooseberries.
I've been growing "Invicta" happily for the last 4 years. It's a nice compact bush. Disease resistance is excellent. I get a very good yield with minimum effort. The fruit is great for tarts and sauce with mackerel. It's viciously thorny though.
I have a gooseberry which is in a pot on the patio. It just looks spindly and very thorny. It had an attack of the sawfly larvae this summer, but otherwise seems fine. And yet it doesn't want to flower. Any ideas why? I was given it a couple of years ago and so I don't know what variety it is. I am loathe to chuck it just for these reasons. Thanks, wg
I would take it out of the pot and plant it into the ground. It may not have enough room, water or nutrients in a pot.
