Interesting:
I've been listening to GQT on and off since I was a child and I remember the thrill when my grandmother got to ask a question and we sat down as a family to hear her on the radio so it was with interest I picked up on this article. I agree with pretty much everything Stefan says. Perhaps if I'd listened to the programme after a long break the differences in format pre 1994 and today would be more obvious but the changes have crept up on me in such a way that I'd completely forgotten how good the programme used to be.

I used to like Stefan but in this article he seems to a) take credit for the change in GW and b)come over as an embittered ex-panelist who wants the good old days and any change that doesn't meet with approval is a bad move.
I seem to recall that he and Daphne Ledward quit the programme along with some others to start a new show on Classic fm-didn't seem to last very long did it?
What is wrong with a weather forecast?
Does it really matter where panelists come from-surely what they have to say is the important thing-unfortunately Clay Jones,Geoffrey Smith etal are no longer with us and radio in funding terms as the poor sister of tv is not going to attract the "big names"-I am surprised that Chris Beardshaw does it.
I have to admit only being an occasional listener these days but did go to a recording recently -the audience who were mainly of a certain age-seemed to enjoy it-although an hour of questions does get cut to 30mins or so-but then all programmes are edited probably because of the number of similar questions being asked-even the vine weevil one came up and surprisingly that did escape the cut.
I expect if anybody revisted any programme that hadn't listened to for a while they would notice a change and aren't the Radio 4 listeners the loudest complainers about anything!

I attended a recording of GW at the British school in Brussels a few years ago. The audience is invited to put their questions in advance and the team chooses which will be answered. They were fascinated by how many of us had "gone native" and ate chicons/ Belgian endives and did a set piece on its history and cultivation as part of thebroadcast but not part of the live recording.
I rarely listen to it these days as it's on at funny hours for me and I don't often think to have it on the PC while working on other things as I usually need to concentrate. The last time I did hear it I enjoyed it.
I think Stefan is just a bit out of date in his views. I saw a programme he did a few years ago going to help people redesign problem areas and it was all a bit staid.

The lack of response on here (a gardening message board) to the article makes me wonder if Stefan has a point? Are GQT listeners in decline?

Or maybe the kind of person who listens to GQT simply either doesn't read the Mail or doesn't do message boards.

I have been gardening for 40yrs plus and I have never listened to GQT. (remiss of me or what?)
I used to listen regularly to the Potting Shed on Radio Devon (although the reception wasn't brilliant here in W.Wales).
