Complaint
A listener complained about the programme鈥檚 coverage of the previous day鈥檚 speech by the UN Secretary-General about the Israel-Gaza conflict.聽 By focusing on the Israeli government鈥檚 reaction to the speech, the programme had effectively hidden the aspects of the speech which implied criticism of Israel and had shown bias in favour of the Israeli government鈥檚 narrative. 聽The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the 麻豆社鈥檚 editorial standards of impartiality.
Outcome
The content of the speech had been covered by the 麻豆社 on the previous day (notably, in the 24 October edition of The World Tonight), and the focus of Today鈥檚 coverage reflected the extent to which the story had moved on.聽 The programme鈥檚 reflection of a range of other viewpoints on the speech obviated any danger of apparent bias towards the Israeli position.
