Complaint
During this programme Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, also known as Tommy Robinson, was described by a contributor as the leader of the English Defence League, prompting a listener to complain this was inaccurate as the League had been disbanded some years ago. 聽The ECU considered whether the broadcast met the editorial standards for accuracy set out in the 麻豆社 Editorial Guidelines.
Outcome
The ECU agreed it was inaccurate to describe Mr Yaxley-Lennon as such, but considered it an understandable mistake as he had published a number of posts before and during riots in Southport regarded as inflammatory, and Merseyside Police, in a statement, had described some of those involved in the events as people 鈥渨ho identify as English Defence League鈥. 聽The ECU took the view that the inaccuracy would not have materially affected listeners鈥 understanding of the matter under consideration, and that the overall impression given 鈥 that Mr Robinson, known for his connection with the English Defence League, had made claims about events in Southport 鈥 was duly accurate.
