Farming Today This Week, 麻豆社 Radio Four, 27 April 2024

Complaint

The programme included an item about the risk to farmers in Ukraine from Russian landmines.聽 A listener complained the presenter failed to mention the use of landmines by Ukrainian forces. 聽The ECU considered whether the broadcast met the 麻豆社 requirements for accuracy.

Outcome

The presenter introduced the item by saying that around 38 million acres of Ukrainian farmland had been rendered too dangerous to farm by Russian mines. 聽Whilst there is documented evidence of a small number of mines being laid by Ukrainian forces in the city of Izium while it was under Russian control, the item itself concerned the extent of the loss of farmland, the risks to farmers and the difficulties in removing the danger. 聽In the ECU鈥檚 view there was no clear evidence that Ukrainian mines have seriously affected farmland and it would not therefore have been relevant to refer to Ukraine鈥檚 use of mines in a report about the effects on agriculture.
