麻豆社 Prime Ministerial Debate, 麻豆社 One, 26 June 2024

Complaint

This debate include a question from a member of the public about the position of Keir Starmer and Rishi Sunak on gender identity and trans rights. A viewer complained it led to the presenter of the debate Mishal Hussein taking an explicitly anti trans position and that the uniqueness of the question demonstrated clear editorial bias. The ECU considered whether the discussion met the standards of due impartiality and accuracy set out in the 麻豆社 Editorial Guidelines.

Outcome

In the ECU鈥檚 view there was a clear editorial justification for asking both leaders to explain and clarify their position on gender identity and trans rights since it was a subject which had prompted debate and discussion during the campaign. Ms Husain read out the question but did not endorse the terms in which it was put. Along with the other questions put to the party leaders, it reflected the questioner鈥檚 own language and views on a relevant issue, not that of the 麻豆社. Viewers and listeners would have judged the terms in which this question was phrased accordingly.
