Summary of complaint
We received complaints about recent protests and violence as having a βfar rightβ background.
Our response
We have reported on the factors influencing the demonstrations and protests which took place in the wake of the stabbings in Southport. Where appropriate, that has included references to the political background of groups β highlighted by Police and recent comments from the prime minister β as including elements from the more extreme ends of the political spectrum. We clearly defined the different gatherings which took place there β from the initial peaceful vigil in memory of the victims (6-8pm), to the later βEnough Is Enoughβ riots which included people from outside the area.Μύ

A statement from the Merseyside Police on Tuesday night (July 30th) highlighted the reported involvement of EDL supporters in the larger crowds, attacking a local mosque and engaging in criminal behaviour. The disturbances of that first night, and those which followed elsewhere, are well documented - including attacks on the emergency services, threats against local families and looting of businesses, and verified reports of racist abuse.
The role of social media, misinformation and rumour, together with organised groups arriving from elsewhere has been clearly attributed in our coverage:

Importantly, we distinguish between the different factors at play in larger gatherings: βNot everyone attending these protests or posting about the Southport attacks holds fringe views, supports rioting or has links to far-right groups. The protests also appeared to draw in people concerned about violent crime or misled by the misinformation that the attack was linked to illegal immigration.β Our use of language is evidence-based and with careful attention to detail, checking sources on the ground and reflecting a wide range of official statements addressing the influence of βfar rightβ groups on these events.
