An IDF Soldier Writes

Dan Damon Dan Damon | 13:58 UK time, Wednesday, 19 July 2006

The blogs being written about the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah and its impact on Lebanon are offering a unique insight.

Non-stop commentary on bombing raids

And especially worth reading some of the 383 (!) comments to this It's a sometimes breathless debate between Lebanese and Isaelis, including a comment from an IDF soldier...

Hey.
I'm an IDF soldier stationed at the Lebanon is border, but got back home for a funeral of someone I knew.

We can't see all the bombing on Lebanon here from Israel (naturaly we're focusing on bombs at Israel), so you're pretty much updating me on what's going on.

I don't want to start arguing about who's right and who's wrong, the finaly word is that it's not right that civilians get hurt in the process, from both sides.

I'm sending you my best wishes from here, and hope that you and your family will be strong and be alright until this horrible situation will be over.

Shachar.

Cameraphones are too.

In official IDF circles, according to intel reports, the mobilisation of reserves and the movement of units continues as if a larger ground incursion is in preparation.

It's pretty clear that hezbulla has placed its weapons and offices in close proximity to civilians including on the lower floors of apartment buildings. The hezbulla leadership hides behind civilians.

The world blames Israel for civilian casualties but in reality hezbulla has created this entire catastrophic event from the start.

I started reading the IDF soldier's post with some anxiety; I was overwhelmingly relieved by the sincere expression of what should be a "no brainer". Attacking civilians and non-combatants is wrong, regardless of which side one thinks is right or wrong in the dispute.

Unfortunately, it's only a "no-brainer" to those who haven't been brainwashed to believe that annihilating an entire country is a legitimate method of self-defense, since it is admittedly quite effective. I, too, am encouraged to hear that some Israelis consider the bombing a wrong and dangerous way of fighting (the Syrians). I just wish more Israelis would protest against their govt's decisions.
