Border Patrol

Blog commentator Roberto C. Alvarez-Galloso sends a series of phone pictures of the May 1st 'Day Without Immigrants'.

Here are just a couple.

Roberto also tells us his views.

"It is understandable that most should have demonstrated in their home countries for the necessary changes. Even Mexico eventually would have to reform its body politic so that jobs could be created in Mexico [instead`of the brain drain to the USA]. Mexico also returns refugees entering their borders to their countires of origin.

As for the USA, while they have a right to defend their borders, there is no excuse for the politicians and US Media to fuel the flames of hatred on the basis of ethnicity."

You know, I'm starting to wonder if all this immigration stuff might be yet another way to mask racism in my country.

All the talk here in the US is aimed specifically at the Mexican border. At least that's all we're hearing of it.

Do these same rules - these steps to citizenship - apply to other people illegally in the US?

What if the illegal party is from somewhere other than Mexico? What if they're from India? Or some Middle Eastern country? Or Ireland, or Italy? Do these amnesty (my words) rules apply to them as well?

It does seem to me that we're rewarding people for doing something illegal and, at the same time, laughing in the face of those who took the long and legal way to citizenship.

I work in the IT field and we have quite a few people here who are legally in our country, who legally took the road to citizenship. What do I tell my friends here at work, immigrants from India and Pakistan who all went through an arduous process to legally enter the US? Do we tell them we're sorry? Do we tell them it's "just the way things happen"?

Is the US Gov. going to refund the money spent by these individuals to legally enter the US?

It seems to me, personally, that perhaps the Bush Administration is playing with more smoke and mirrors. Why is this quite suddenly an issue, when the presidents approval rating is falling because of Iraq?

Just my thoughts.
Warm Regards,
