Allegations denied but the evangelist resigns

Ros Atkins Ros Atkins | 14:33 UK time, Friday, 3 November 2006

Hi there. It's not too often I get a full hour for lunch but today, well I didn't get a full hour for lunch but I did get that long to go hunting for a new bag for our trip to the States. It's such a beautiful crisp day here in London that even felt bearable. Anyway, I have returned with a large red bag which Rozita informs me is a bit 'girly'. What can I say?

An interesting meeting today. Field in Zambia is a guy I met at the . I was out there for the World service and David had called me asking to see if I could find Brazil supporters who weren't from Brazil. Just when it was looking like the answer would be 'no' out of Frankfurt station walked Field wearing a bright yellow Brazil shirt and we were in business. We've kept in touch since and he was interested in our recent plan to open up our editorial meeting. So he joined us. I was interested in his idea about a political split between the towns and the countries in Zambia... We'll try and return to that when we're back from the States.

LIFE IN NAPLES

On Tuesday an email from Stefano about the worsening crime situation in Naples prompted us to hear from cities around the world which have been labelled as dangerous because of crime. And Stefano was right to get in touch. There have now been as the Mafia fight it out. The Italian minister for the Interior has said that Naples Stefano will tell give us his view of what's happening there.

LIFE IN NORTH KOREA

This is a story which has taken two days to get on air. On Wednesday we agreed we wanted to speak to Peter Simpson - a journalist who had managed to get into North Korea under the guise of being a journalist. Yesterday we recorded him answering a number of your questions. We planned to play the segment but then the discussion about young black men became so passionate that we felt it couldn't be interrupted. So we'll play it tonight. It's a fascinating insight into life in North Korea.

SHOULD TED HAGGARD HAVE RESIGNED?

And there's one story that seems to be dominating discussions in America today and that's the - the head man in the 30-million-member . He stands accused of having a sexual relationship with a man, something that would be at odds with his stance on same-sex marriages. But let's be clear - Mr Haggard has not resigned because he admits this (on the contrary he denies it) but because he could "not continue to minister under the cloud created by the accusations". Though if you read this post here it seems that some admission of some indiscretion has been made - but we have no idea what.

So what's your reaction to this story? Is a political move to discredit a man closely associated with the Republican Party just before the ? Do you think Mr Haggard should have continued ministering as he refutes the homosexual sex claims? Or is the fact that he has stepped aside, evidence that he the allegations have damaged the support he has from the members of the National Association of Evangelicals? Much to talk about although a strange story because as yet there's no evidence that Mr Haggard has done anything wrong or hypocritical.
