England to play a waiting game

After England’s defeat , which meant qualification was no longer in their own hands, there was discussion among the FA board regarding Steve McClaren’s future.

The person who was pushing for a re-assessment of McClaren’s position was FA chairman Geoff Thompson.

But there was a feeling among the board, led by Sir David Richards, the chairman of the Premier League, that if the criterion was to have an English manager then McClaren was the best option as the choices .

Platini loses power battle to Europe's big clubs

Instead of cutting the power of the bigger leagues like the Premier League he has ended up making them stronger.

He has made some changes but they are nothing like as revolutionary as he promised.

London unveils 2012 stadium plans

Tottenham insiders say their shows the ambition of chairman Daniel Levy, who may not have won any trophies so far, or got into the Champions League, but has made handsome profits and made sure that off the field Spurs are a successful club.

But the club needs success on the field and the new vision of being a top four club with a big new spanking stadium means they have to perform where it matters.

What's more, the board feel if they don't catch up with the existing big four now, then maybe they never will. There's a real sense of now or never.

2018: Could too many European bids split Uefa?

Uefa is getting concerned that although has just opened there may be too many contenders from Europe, severely damaging any chances of the competition returning to the continent.

Although Uefa has eight votes in the 24-man Fifa executive, if there are five or more Europeans bidding it could hopelessly split the vote and allow a strong non-European candidate such as Mexico, USA or Australia to come through.
