Mohammed Asghar

Betsan Powys | 22:05 UK time, Thursday, 18 October 2007

Just to let you know that Mohammed Asghar, the Plaid Cymru AM who is travelling with Benazir Bhutto in Pakistan is shaken but unhurt after the suicide bombings in Karachi.

I understand he was travelling with the party when the bombs went off but it seems as though the bombers killed and injured innocent bystanders standing on the roadside, rather than those inside the coaches.

There'll be more on Good Morning Wales and Post Cyntaf.

I'm sure his constituents will be glad to hear that he's OK - maybe not so glad to find out he's not even in the Country yet alone the constituency! Good to see he's doing his job!

The obvious question is - why is Mohammed Asghar travelling round Pakistan with Benazir Bhutto when he is paid to represent the people of South East Wales?

Our Assembly's powers are sadly parochial but that doesn't mean that our minds have to be too. As one of Mr Asghar's constituents I am delighted that he is trying to do his bit for a happier Pakistan. He realises that good relations between a stable Pakistan and the UK mean a better chance for good relations within our diverse local communities here in south east Wales. I don't know him personally but I welcome his efforts.

Did anyone even know this guy was an AM until last week? He's not exactly been making a huge impression at the Assembly since he got elected....
