London Festival of Architecture
Is it just me, or does this year's feel bigger and better this year? If you'd asked me six months ago which was the city's biggest architectural event I would have said the . For the past five years or so the event has felt like the true start of autumn and the length of the queues outside many of the buildings has been a testament to the success of the project. This year, however, although I will be making a date with some of London's hidden corners come September, I'm very excited about the current festival - some of it might even happen while the sun is out.
Tonight there's an around central London with Professor Richard Burdett of the LSE, who will be exploring the vexed question of how public spaces are developing. If the event wasn't booked up already I would love to be there - not only is it a very interesting issue, but I'd love to see how Professor Burdett will manage to cycle and give a talk at the same time. Will he be at the head of a phalanx of cyclists with a megaphone? Will he be driven ahead by car? What will happen if poor cyclists fail to keep up or uninvited members of the cycling fraternity attempt to join in. If you're at the event let us know how it goes.
The imaginative approach to architecture continues tonight with a in the shape of London buildings. I hate jelly and even I think that it's a great idea - a feast for the eyes if not for the taste buds. The sheer volume of events on offer is bewildering: tours, , debates, films, performances, a and, perhaps unwisely, an event featuring . There is a healthy amount of eating at this festival, and by healthy I mean unhealthy (in a good way). I'm hoping that I'll get to the at the weekend, an attempt to transform Montague Place, what the organisers describe as having 'the potential to be one of the capital's great outdoor spaces'.
