Police Diver

Feeling your way in freezing, dark waters for dead bodies is not everyone’s idea of job fulfillment. If you are Ross Atkinson, a police diver for the Northumbria Police force, then this could be your average day at work. Ross is part of the diving team that is called on to retrieve evidence, or sometimes dead people, from anywhere watery in the North East of England.

    I work alongside Ross and his team in the Tyne Ports. They are a thoroughly professional bunch of guys who do a tough job.

    It was good to hear the radio broadcast and great that this small section of the police has got some recognition.

    The traditional idea of a diver is reefs and colourful fish - these guys get the gruesome reality but also the chance to come to work at speed in a RIB.

    Well done the Beeb - for giving us this insight !
