Five-a-side rugby anyone? (51)

Honesty is the best thing I think. You see, the editor of the blog wants us all to pick our team of the tournament.

But I don鈥檛 want to. I want to talk about how rugby needs to get its act together. From a rugby point of view, this has been the worst ever world cup.

Why all six nations should back England (419)

I know, I know, it might seem a crazy idea, but I鈥檇 like all Scots, Welsh, Irish, French and Italians to support England in the rugby World Cup final. What do you think?

Aaargh, stop throwing bricks at me and let me put forward my logic.

You see, when I was a wee boy growing up in , the UK seemed a long way away. But it also struck me that all of us in the Northern Hemisphere are quite like each other. For instance, you can鈥檛 say that someone a mile north of the is markedly different from someone a mile south of it.

Is the World Cup too long? (148)

Sorry, sorry, sorry. But this World Cup is too long.

Yes, I agree the Haka is a meaningless one sided warm-up (I used to do some very choice hand movements when facing it and had a laugh); All Black Ali Williams should have had his head guard lifted and chucked for miles when he left it within spitting distance of the Scots; oh, and all the games should have been played in one country 鈥 well, what part of France contains Murrayfield?

Beginning of the end for Six Nations? (155)

Do you know, I think that this World Cup is hastening the end of the .

The premier northern hemisphere competition is being exposed for what many have suspected it to be for a while 鈥 protectionist.

About John Beattie (0)

I was born in Borneo, and swinging from tree to tree helped me in later years as I ended up playing rugby for Scotland.

This was predicted, funnily enough, by my Malaysian headmaster who said, on the day I left to start his new life in Scotland as an eleven year old: 鈥淏eattie, you are the roughest boy we have ever had here - you will surely play rugby for your new country.鈥

I won 25 caps and went on two British Lions tours and on retiring slid into broadcasting even though Chartered accountancy was tugging at my heart strings..

I play guitar in a rock band for fun, coach West of Scotland rugby club, and host radio and TV programmes North of Hadrian鈥檚 wall.

I鈥檓, frankly, a bit alarmed that my son, also John, now plays international rugby as it doesn鈥檛 seem that long since the child was brought home in a blanket.
