Overdue appearance
The Business and Industry Select Committee's long struggle to get the "" in front of it (see my post of 7 January) has ended in success. The four executives in control of MG Rover when it collapsed, John Towers, Nick Stephenson, Peter Beale and John Edwards, are now booked to appear in early March.
The after the firm's collapse when it emerged that they had taken an estimated £42m in pay and pensions from the company, before its implosion in 2005, with the loss of more than 6,000 jobs. Now a combination of negotiation and sabre-rattling has reeled them in - and the hearing will be watched with considerable fascination in Birmingham, where the job losses hit hardest.
But one possible snag remains. There's talk that the government may go to court to get the Four barred from serving as company directors. And so if their conduct in charge of the last British mass motor manufacturer becomes sub judice, then the whole inquiry will almost certainly have to be shelved until after the election
