Definitely Still Absolutely Fabulous

Jon Aird | 00:01 UK time, Monday, 29 August 2011

The award-winning Absolutely Fabulous will return to 麻豆社 One later this year with the first of three specials to celebrate its 20th anniversary. Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley will reprise their roles as Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone, together with original cast members Julia Sawalha as Saffy, June Whitfield as Mother and Jane Horrocks as Bubble.

Absolutely Fabulous follows the lives of two best friends, Edina, an International PR guru by trade, but sixties teenager at heart and Patsy, a sex-crazed magazine editor.

The new collection of specials picks up in the present day. Eddy was into every new fad and fashion imaginable and was often to be found at the bottom of a champagne glass. Not much has changed. Patsy worked in magazines and lived the high life. She still does. Saffy was hardworking and all but ignored by her mother and hated by Patsy. Saffy has definitely grown up. Eddy's mother was - and is, her mother. Unbelievably Eddy's PA, Bubble, is still employed and at one point displays a skill no-one knew she had, least of all her.

We will join them in the midst of a life-changing experience, Eddy will set her sights on changing the career of a very big fish indeed, and will go on to play a very special part in the London 2012 Olympics.

They're back, 20 years on, a teeny bit older, none the wiser but definitely still Absolutely Fabulous.

Jennifer Saunders said: "Its great that we are able to celebrate our 20th birthday with all the original cast. Like a good bottle of champagne we hope that we have got better with time without losing any of our sparkle. Last week when we started filming in dear old West London, it was as if nothing had changed. It was raining. Nevertheless, we are so happy to be working for an audience that has grown just a tiny bit older like us, but is still willing to let us fall over on TV in the name of PR."

Executive Producer Jon Plowman said: "Viewers have been fantastically loyal in their devotion to our show, so we're really thrilled to say that it's coming back for three new shows to celebrate our 20th anniversary. All of the originals who are back together again are still truly absolutely fabulous and the new adventures of Edina, Patsy, Saffy, Bubble and Mother, plus a few surprising guests, will be a real treat for viewers."

Absolutely Fabulous is a 麻豆社 Comedy co-production with Saunders and French Productions and has been written by Jennifer Saunders. Directed by Mandie Fletcher and produced by Justin Davies. Executive Producer is Jon Plowman.

The words 'Jennifer Saunders' and 'comedy' do not sit happily in a sentence. In fact 'oxymoron' it undoubtedly is.
JS has no sense of timing, cannot deliver a line and, no matter how many silly hats worn, it still looks like JS doing 5th form school review.... badly!

Hey, Jennifer Saunders's timing as well as dialogue delivery is not so bad. Even I think, she is good in comedy.

Ad Fab was in its day one of those ground breaking series, refreshing and new. As was Monty Phython, Fawlty Towers, Not the NineO'Clock News and The Young Ones. Nothing wrong with JS or any of the cast! I hope the specials work as well.
I am still amazed by June Whitefield's diverse career and the brilliant way that she has managed to move with the times and survive every change.

I am sooo excited I love Ab Fab and think French and sanders are both funny and brillant writers. I think Joanna Lumley and Jennifer saunders are the best and they keep me laughing all the way through the episodes! I cannot wait :) xxxx

everyone has a right to an opinion but phil is way off and millions agree with me jennifer saunders is one of the greatest comedy writers of all time with the awards and fans to proof it

Please bring AbFab to 麻豆社 America! I miss my girls!

Just saw the ad for their 20th show and I can't wait!! Ad Fab is fantastic, one of the best comedy series ever! Saunders and French are like salt and pepper, there's no issues with timing, they play their roles very well but you must first appreciate off-color and inappropriate humor.

I've always been a big fan of Ab Fab so was so pleased to see it back on TV. I watched the chrismas special last night (which btw was the best thing on TV all day). I was laughing from start to finish. It picked up right where it left off. Great British comedy, well written, brilliant acting from everyone. JS still has it, JL great as ever as Patsy, JSw hasn't changed or aged a bit as saffy. JH was fantastic as the ditzy bubble and JW is still great as the interfering mother. It made my day. Great Job! I can't wait for the NY's Day episode.

    Yup! Very Funny.
I am reminded, however, that June Whitfield may be a fraud??????
There was an episode of "Take it from here" when Jimmy Edwards revealed that her true name was April Eastermeadow and he changed it to June Whitfield.
If nothing else this proves that I am very old and still have a good memory.
    Long may she rule.

Along with DC we have now all seen the Ghost of Claire Rayner, an equal match to Scrooge's eerie drifting specter in Muppets as Joanna Lurks! in the kitchen shadow of the fridge and then passes over, gliding black across Saffi's precious moment re-uniting with Edina, tremendous scene reminds me of a blackened crow, especially the ones we saw at Girton wing from the trees at dusk during the Scottish Play, or the dark eyed John Laurie ... doom dooom ... the theme for 2012's broadcasts. Superb, Wonderful, definitely Absolutely Fabulous ... although it wasn't actually that good, was it darling?, was it ? ... are you sure darling, cos' mummy would not want you to miss out on anything darling, yes she would says Joanna. Beautiful cast, could do with "polishing", do it again, do women never get to retire and rest ?! on their Laurels, oh Caesar. A fitting episode for the Beginning of a New Era in which we bathe ever more deeply at the Sink Port of the Bath Jacuzzi from 01 January 2012, onward, past El Cid, through the Desert reg to the sands filling The Ditch, across the Mountains of Gurkha of 1943 clogged in river mud rid bridge, the Operatic sunset of Roman Coliseum and some Greek Played themes; reminds me of School English classes, talking of Milau Clarkson and Structural Bending Failings this was definitely not sheared production, it was sheer comedy and very good sense also. God Bless Jennifer Happy New Year Joanna Julia Jane and June, some people are very tall, except Lulu of course and that very serious literary critic Kirsty, but then Emma and Lindsay did well as prima donna, I loved the part of Durand, silence is golden, I am. Jennifer saunders and the rest of the AbFab cast are amazing! im a big fan of the series and have followed it from the start to say she has bad timing or can't deliver a line is rediculous! it wouldnt have been so successful if she couldn't and the silly hats are what 'Eddie' is about thats part of her character to wear outrageous clothes! JS is an amazing writing and in my opinion shouldn't be critisized for her work! We love you Jen!

Hey Phil, you wouldn't understand anyway. You're not a women.

  • Comment number 16.

Lizzie - I've just been looking for when the 3rd episode will be shown as well. From what i've read, it sounds like the 3rd episode is an Olympics special and won't be shown until the Olympics start. Ages away yet :(

I'm a huge fan since i discovered the show almost 20 years ago on a french TV, dubbed in french... Since then i never stopped enjoying edina and patsy's funny and awkward adventures. I just love them and i'm so thrilled by their come-back for this 20th anniversary. I wish a movie could be done (a french adaptation was done in 2001 but it was sooooooooooo bad that i could'nt fully watch it). Please Jennifer, Joanna, June, Julia and Jane !! Come back and stay longer!!!

I have only seen the first of the 3 new installments, and it was fabulous! When are the other 2 coming out?

I love this show. I recently started back watching it on Logo and I just feel in love. I tried watching on the 麻豆社 and could never get in the series, but I was at home one Sunday and started watching it, and I told my husband that 鈥渢hese two are crazy鈥 I love the show and wish you would make more new episodes. I love the fashion and style of Ed and Pasty they remind me of my friend Tasha and I. Keep showing new episodes. Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!

It is create to have this series back on our screens. The Olympics episode certainly lived up to its name, because it really was absolutely fabulous. I loved it! I saw this article with a quote from where she talks about getting better in time like a good bottle of wine. It is such a great line and so relevant to Patsy in particular. I hope the 麻豆社 will commission more shows that we could look forward to at Christmas.
