Salad, salad, salad, salad, salad, salad, salad....

Chris Evans | 08:43 UK time, Wednesday, 16 September 2009

... S - A - L - A - D is my friends the food equivalent of going home early from a really good party. Nobody wants to do it but afterwards you are so glad you did.

Last night as I drove home at what was only 7.30 whilst it was pitch black and almost monsoon conditions on the A40/M25, I hoped and prayed Tash had forsaken our agreed healthy Tuesday for something more befitting the need. Maybe even getting her sis round to babysit so we could nip out for a quick pub dinner but alas no, the salad was prepared - and guess what ? Not only was it gorgeous but I had THREE "go backs for" and still didn't feel stuffed at the end - I even treated myself to a small armagnac as a reward.

In bed after a bit of Beatles "nostalge" on tape and I felt swell but not swollen, a rare thing for me - albeit a little windy.

Salad again tonight ?

Of course not, maybe same time next year though.

Salad is good but not when its cold!!!!
good for tash though keeping you on the straight and narrow.
I felt like porridge this morning (both to eat and kinda just like porridge too) and have to remember to buy some on way home - am starving now and only have bananas but I have no idea where local supermarche is - can only find small expensive places - hopefully soon I will be brave enough to venture out on my own

PS - just you and me again CLP - people will talk ;-)

CLP...too much salad creating wind as an after effect...TMI me thinks!!!!

BUT think you've picked the wrong time of year to go all salad healthy style.....as you said, gets dark and cold early on now...hence you feel the need for a winter warmer meal......

Back to the x-trainer Chris....that forgives all sins...even too much armagnac!!!

Good morning Chris! Oooh, we you are the early bird these days - very impressive!

We had salad last night too - and roast chicken, all very well behaved. MsS had made a special request that we have a "light" dinner - she is feeling her size 8's getting a little tight. I tried to explain to her that this may due to the fact that she goes out clubbing three nights a week, and on the way home at 3am, she and her mates have chips & cheese as a nightcap!

Chris are you aware that there are requests on Terry's show as to where the TOGS can get COGS stickers instead?!!

Chris......what's worserer.....going home in the dark and the cold or going TO work in it????

Still, the new early morning starts should help to keep you on the straight and narrow ay??? I know it didn't always work back in the late 90's R1 days, but you're all grown up and a responsible Dad now....or so they say??!!!

    Morning all

Oh no, it's far too cold for salads now! Comfort food is definately the way to go.

Hope Rips has packed his winter woolies, as it's perishing up here today! It looks nice, but there's a very cold wind!

JG - had a txt from Rips this morn - he said he's not in the most desireable area of 'Pool!

Chrissie - he'll be home for Noah bath and bed time! Sweet!!

Comfort food: it's gotta be mash potato every tme. And a big hearty beef and ale stew with loads of winter veggies and pulses in it. And dumplings. and warm fresh bread to dunk in .....

    Wowser! That's Sunday's dinner sorted ....!!!

I just had to say that all this talk of winter stew is making me hungry already and it's only 10 o'clock! AND I had porridge this morning!!
I think CLP will do a fab job at breakfast - and i can see with a small child it might work a lot better for him! and did i hear on the news last night that Simon Mayo is taking over drive time? Bet that'll be met with mixed reviews!

Comfort food? Baked Chicken Risotto & it's from a Low-Fatty cook book so good for you to. Stoooooo sounds good, Deevs, smoked paprika , eh. Have to try that.

Baz, I thinks better to go to work in the dark if you can then come home in the daylight. Worserest of all is going to work and coming home in the dark! We're all mushrooms really, kept in the dark and.........

Morning - bit bleary eyed this am........

I had salad for tea too....and pizza....but more salad than pizza, honest! The boy had some too, well tomato, cucumber and lots of beetroot, he loves beetroot!

What he doesn't love is his bed.....................

Took two hours to get him to sleep(about 9pm) and then he was up again at 1am, by 3am I was in tears and gave in, he came into my bed and we both slept till the alarm went off at 6.45am. Think the cot is going to have to come back for a little while longer - just can't do it when I'm on my own.

    Off to find more tea.......

Pork medallions last night with roast pots and parsnips, runner beans and baby carrots. Cottage pie tonight again with loadsa veg!

Hope it hasn't put you out - he said!

So - pulled over, calmed down, rang the hotel who thankfully have a before 4pm cancellation policy and am now on route to Cardiff where I have booked into the Celtic Manor - cheaper than the other place anyway!!

It's not too bad as it means I don't have to drive to Cardiff and back on Friday before then taking the family back down the M4 en-route to Cornwall for my sisters wedding this weekend.

    Morning!

Chris I am very impressed that you managed to stick to just the salad. I always have good intentions of eating more salads, but just can never stick to it! I'm just not a healthy eater, I usually have to involve a steak in my attempts to eat a salad portion. And one thing I really don't get . . .people who can go out to a restaurant for a meal, and have a salad as their main course!

I had a Chinese last night - blame my sister though, it was her idea. We were wondering . . .does the seaweed starter count as a fruit/veg portion?

    SWF x

  • Comment number 37.

SWF, seaweed deffo counts as a portion - as do crisps in my book!!

Rips, at least you get to sit in the car listening to t'radio instead of being at a boring meeting!!

PS- MTV......well, wierd as it may seem, the salad subject seems to be doing quite well today, but I'm ready for a change in topic now....actually...yeh, I could murder a Topic!!!!

  • Comment number 39.

    Chris

I reckon that the resaon that salad seems inappropriate at this time of year is that our ancestors would be, at this time of year taking advantage of the glut of food that was available in order to get them through the winter months when food would be scarce and the weather cold.

However our modern life style means that we have food and warm shelter througout the winter, but something inside us still tells us that we need to bulk up to get through the cold weather.

Could this be one reason why so many people are overweight?

  • Comment number 40.

Yay Tinsel, I like your answer! I was sure it would count as well.

TB - sorry, didn't catch that . . .can't understand you around the mouthful of Topic! ;-)

The annoying thing with Salad is when you go back to use it a day later rigor mortis and rot has already begun to set in.

So that technically means an item for the slop bucket. Now the Government is insisting we all have slop buckets. I would like to know what they intend to do with them. Surely there could never be enough pigs to scoff the whole countries slop buckets.
Perhaps they will also insist we all have a pig of our own.

    Raddishes to that.

Lunchtime!! The local Spa has a salad counter, so as I'm now feeling guilty about the lack of healthy food in my diet I'm going to wander down and pick up a bowl.

Might have to get a choccie bar too though, in order to keep my sugar levels topped up for the afternoon. And afterall, the good calories in the salad will cancel out the bad calories in the chocolate . . .

Can't say I had anything that healthy yesterday, not a leaf in sight! Nearest I got to anything proper was a ham and cheese toastie as I didn't get time between what I was doing and then visiting friend and teeny baby then getting to footy... those steps up to my seat are getting longer I swear.

Today I've managed a sausage and tomato sarnie and I'm making chilli for tea... at some point.

Had the furniture delivered today for the re-vamp of the spare room on Friday. Once thats all done I can get everything sorteed in the nursery, wash all the clothes, sheets, towels etc and put them all away in prep... am I getting excited.... Hell Yeah!

Salad: my favourite is spinach, watercress and rocket, tossed in extra virgin (oooer) and parmesan. We have it most nights. Boleynman and Boleynteen2 love homemade creamy potato salad drenched in mayonnaise, which kind of defeats the object. I recently rediscovered Waldorf Salad (a la Fawlty Towers) and love it, but that's also a bit lardy.

Lyndyloo, can't believe it's so soon, you must be soooooo excited. I know we all said it when little Noah was born, but it really is the best thing ever! When are you stopping work? I loved being pregnant (apart from the heartburn, the insommnia, and other things far too unpleasant to mention here), loved the whole growing a baby thing.

Beezer, maybe you need to change your barnet fixer!

Tuna, lime and coriander fishcakes tonight courtesy of Sainsbugs, with savoury rice and.....salad!

Hope all are well and dandy and playing nicely.

Oh, I am soooo glad to be home, such a stressful day, with loads of off the wall queries, phone calls and just general hassle!

So treating myself to a few minutes of chilling time before trying to tidy up a bit - although Mr JG will be off for 6 days after tonight, so I might just leave it to him - he might just surprise me, but I won't hold my breath!

Lyndy, I can't believe how fast time flies! Glad you're getting organised in good time, so you won't get too tired!

Rips, sorry you missed the delights of Manchester - another time eh?enjoy Cardiff, well Newport really I suppose!

Oh, and Beez, really must get mine cut too, but absolutely hate it! But after 18 months, it probably needs a trim ....

    Evening!

Well it went mad this arvo at the fun factory. Man boss got back later than he'd anticipated (by some 2 hours) and it went into orbital spinning mode! Shouting, hissy tantrums, stampy feet .... and that was just aimed at lady boss (or ma as he calls her!). But we rallied round as a team, calmed him, got ALL his work emailed out, orders ordered and all serenity returned by half five.

Thankfully he's in Scotland all day tomorrow ...... and breathe!

So, 100 days til Christmas eh?? In honour of that factoid maybe CLP should play Gretchen Wilson's Red Neck Woman after Women's Minute tomorrow - purely for the line "I keep my christmas lights on, on my front porch all year long".

    Class!!! (like me i spose!!)

Mr Deev cooking dinner so I am going to settle down with the Lakeland Christmas Catalogue and see how much I can spend this year ...... THE best panatone ever!!!!!

    Laters lovelies.

    Evening!!

Bacon and spaghetti made and eaten (with enough left for tomorrow) and with comfort food inside me I'm feeling a tad betterer!

I'm leaving the boy's bedtime till as late as poss today - in the hope he'll go to sleep quicker......we'll see.......

And I'm taking a couple of hours off tomorrow to take his new bed down and put his cot back up, I feel deflated about giving up, but I need to sleep!!

We'll try again in a few months, when we're settled in the new house, it may be different when daddy is home all the time!

3 weeks today and we should be in the new house.......arrgghhh!! where's those boxes gone????

Lyndy, good luck enjoy these last few weeks before the fun really sarts

Eb good luck with the packing. Where are you moving too?

Deevs, not sure when it's opening but apparently old Woolies being split into 4 units, Lakeland will be one of them

Oh, Ebb, really feel for you, but I think it's the best thing, otherwise you might get him sorted, and have to start again in the new "strange" bedroom! Good luck with your packing!

I've nothing exciting for tea, need to raid the increasingly empty freezer, having a shopping nightmare at the moment, so will have to concentrate and do an online one. I normally shop on the way home, but the hours himself has been working has meant me tearing home to let a cross-legged Finlay out.

Deev - I need a man who can cook! He can do a fry-up, but you can't live on that, well you can, but just not for very long.....

Oh, and heard a strange noise outside a while ago - found mad-dog trying to dig into the drain cover to get to the water being drained by the dishwasher!!!! I give up!

we're moving into 'defence housing' in Plymouth - t'other will be home every night, we're 2 miles from dartmoor NP, there's woodland right outside our back garden (I give it 2 weeks before we lose the dog or boy!), the only thing that is worrying me is actually living with t'other!!

JG - do you want some of our freezer, I'm trying to run it down and it's not working!!!
