Title: The Big Push

by Kylie from Kent | in writing, poetry

The sun emerges upon the hill,
Awakening the men who live to kill.

With tired eyes, which seem so dim,
They left their dugouts without a whim.

Their bayonets they take in hand,
Staring out at no mans land.

Saddened hearts filled with fear,
Waiting now, death is near.

Frightened by the horrors ahead,
Soon their friends will all be dead.

All in silence, as though in prayer,
Their haunted thoughts, they do not share.

The end has come, as whistles blow.
Marching now, its time to go.

Determined, they climb up over the top.
Screams of pain, as men get shot.

A solemn place so many killed,
Now a peaceful poppy field.
