Title: Fallacy

by Katie | in writing, poetry

Row upon row, clean and white.
Known unto God.
An English garden, roses, neat lawns.
Known unto God.
They stand huddled, a bitter wind blows.
How little can they know!
Known unto God.
A wreath, a cross, a single flower.
Lost, but not forgotten. Our fallen friends.
Known unto God.
Sacrificed to the fallacy
That war can end war.

Never a truer word spoken.

A rare venture into poetry, after a visit to the British Military Cemetry near Ypres. The last lines (""Sacrificed ... can end war."") are the inscription on the headstone of Arthur Conway Young. ""Known unto God"" is what is inscribed on the headstones of unknown soldiers.
