FADE IN:
EXT. BUS SHELTER ' DAY
A vandalised bus shelter with not one intact window and graffiti all over.
RYAN, a tall, streetwise fifteen or sixteen year old boy leans against the back of the shelter, texting on a mobile phone and chewing gum. He wears school uniform and has a backpack on, loosened so that it almost touches the floor. His facial expressions make him look bored.
He stops texting and puts the phone in his pocket. RYAN addresses the audience.
RYAN:
Detention. (PAUSE) Thinking time for me. (PAUSE) You know when you drop a pea on the floor and then you can never find it again. It becomes insignificant on its own. (PAUSE) But when it's with other peas, you just notice them altogether.
RYAN frowns.
RYAN:
That's just like teenagers. Not really noticed on their own, just altogether.
Generalised. Under constant pressure. (PAUSE) That's what 'P' must stand for in pea. Don't do that, do this. Get it right all the time! It's not easy! (PAUSE) And E? (PAUSE) Expectations. You can't do that because it's not cool. (PAUSE) Why not?
RYAN's frown turns to a grin.
RYAN:
After all, I figured the A is for adventure!
The sound of a bus approaching.
FADE TO BLACK.
The story sums up what I think the expectations of a young person in the UK are today. I think Ryan's character is important in showing the expectations visually but through his dialogue, displays hidden intelligence.
