Title: First love

by Robin from Kent | in writing, fiction

The stage is set out as follows;
The left side is Steve's bedroom whilst the right side is Rachel's. Their bedrooms are like mirror images of each other with the centre of the stage being the mirror. Their beds are positioned against the 'mirror' so they reflect each other.

Steve is in his bedroom with his mate; Liam. Rachel is in her bedroom with her best friend; Lilly. Steve is sitting on his bed whilst Liam is kicking a small football. They are both dressed in England football shirts and dirty jeans. Lilly is sitting on the bed whilst Rachel is experimenting with her hair do in her mirror. The girls are both wearing pretty tops and designer jeans.

Rachel's bedroom is cast in shade whilst Steve's bedroom is lit well, causing the audience to focus on Steve's bedroom.

STEVE
What do girls like, Liam?

LIAM
(thinks)
I don't know.

Focus on Rachel's bedroom.

LILLY
What do boys like?

RACHEL
Football, football and more football.

LILLY
That can't be true.

Focus on Steve's bedroom.

LIAM
Wow! Wayne Rooney scored last night!

STEVE
I want to ask her out, but I don't know how.

LIAM
You just need confidence. I was confident when I asked Rachel out, and she said yes.

Focus on Rachel's bedroom.

LILLY
How did Liam ask you out?

RACHEL
He was all shy. Liam can be so cute, that's why I said yes.

Focus on Steve's bedroom.

STEVE
You're right Liam, I can't shy away from the challenges of life.

Steve gets off the bed and walks confidently off the stage to the left.

Focus on Rachel's bedroom.

Steve walks back on the stage from the right and into Rachel's bedroom. He suddenly goes all shy and red, he runs back off the stage.

Focus on Steve's bedroom.

Steve runs back in. Liam folds his arms and looks at Steve with a patronizing gaze.

LIAM
(shaking his head])
You wally!

Steve realises what he has done. Ashamed he exits the stage on the left.

Focus on Rachel's bedroom.

Steve walks back on the stage from the right and into Rachel's bedroom.

STEVE
Lilly, will you go out with me?

LILLY
Yeah, sure.

STEVE
(relieved)
Cool... [to Stephanie] Alright, sis.

I think that the most interesting (and entertaining) aspect of youth today is their first romance. For many children across the UK, asking their first crush if they want to be their girlfriend/boyfriend represents the first challenge in life. The point I'm trying to get across is that STEVE is going to face up to this first challenge in life with confidence (after a little help from his friend). I think that this presents the youth of the UK as confident, friendly and inspiring
