Title: Animal in the woods

by Kate from Devon | in writing, fiction

A shot rang out across the wood. He must have shot a squirrel or something by mistake.
Nevertheless, it meant he was getting closer. I thought I had gotten away; obviously not. I ran and ran and ran as fast as my legs could carry me. I was running way faster than I ever thought I could. That's what adrenaline does for you, I suppose. I was running so fast I couldn't even hear my footsteps, as a matter of fact, the only thing I could hear was the blood pumping through my ears, and the only thing I could feel was my heart trying to pound its way out of my chest. I didn't even know where I was anymore.
I ran for what seemed like hours until I could sense nothing near me, and then stopped. I must have lost him. I looked around me. The wood that I usually knew so well was now a maze of darkness. I had no idea where to turn, whether to call out for help, what to do. There was a faint rustle coming from the left of me. I jumped with fright, and then told myself to get a grip; how could I expect complete silence in the woods? It was just an animal. Still, I was getting really anxious not being able to see anything. I felt around in my pocket for a match: I had one left. I struck it against the bark of a tree to get a flame, and that was when I saw him. I looked up to see his evil face glowing as the light from the match reflected off his grimy, unshaven face. The corners of his mouth curled up into a slow, sickening, toothy grin. I could see the fire in his eyes, but something told me that that fire had nothing to do with the match I was holding.
'Hello, poppet.'

I don't know, really. All of a sudden I just felt like I wanted to write a scene about a chase.
