I chose to create an album cover for El Policia because I related to their style of music, where they are from and what they have to say the most out of all the bands. I began by conveying the apathetic society the band write about by creating a typically suburban setting that is eerily deserted, with an abandoned car to connect no one being about to nobody caring. From here I was led to a Lowry link due to the fact that the band are from Manchester and both the artist and the band have similar themes, with their work being about a grim society and so I used lots of blues and greys. It was for this reason I decided to use paint, also creating the portrait in typical matchstick style. The painted style is also a down to earth technique that is in line with the raw and organic tone of the band's work with the imperfections adding to the earthy, simple feel. The spotlight and smoke around the band focuses attention on them and also creates interest, it makes them seem mysterious and new, something exciting and sets them apart from their apathetic society. This was created on Photoshop a more modern technique to paint, as the band are a mix of the modern and old, making modern indie rock with influences as varied as Tom Waits. This is also shown by the Lowry style, painting the modern car and the modern clothes that they wear. The matchstick characters also emphasise distinctive features of the band to make them recognisable which is helpful when first introducing a band and the font is similarly simple but effective against the dark background again making the band seem like it is a light coming out of the dark to lead society.
