Counting to 10

Let's practise counting on and back to 10.

Example 1

There are 4 pandas drinking at a lake. Then 2 more come along to join them.

6 pandas.

How many pandas were at the lake at first?

First there were 4 pandas at the lake.

How many more then came to the lake?

Then another 2 more were added.

How many pandas are at the lake now?

Now there are 6 pandas altogether.

Let's count them:

Numbered pandas.

There are now 6 pandas.

The last number or largest number tells you how many there are in the group altogether.

First then now pandas.

Example 2

Here are 2 bricks.

2 cubes.

Here are 3 more bricks.

3 cubes.

How many bricks are there altogether?

To find out, add the two groups of bricks together.

5 bricks.

Here is the same problem as a part whole model.

Part whole model.

Push the two groups together into the empty ring.

Part whole model.

How many bricks are there altogether?

Find the answer by counting all the bricks.

There are 5 blocks altogether.

2 and 3 makes 5.

Another way to show what happened is to write the numbers into the circles.

123 part whole.

The number sentence looks like this.

2 + 3 = 5
