Viking food

Description

Presenter James MacKenzie is shown the types of food that the Vikings ate, how it was prepared and cooked. We have learnt about the Vikings鈥 diet and cooking implements from archaeological discoveries in Viking huts and refuse. Vikings ate fruit and vegetables and kept animals for meat, milk, cheese and eggs. They had plenty of fish as they lived near the sea. Bread was made using quern stones, stone tools for hand grinding grain.

Classroom Ideas

Students could be presented with a shopping bag of food, or a picture of one. Students could sort this bag into food that would have been available to the Vikings and food that would not. Students now have their Ready Steady Cook shopping bag of ingredients and could be challenged to come up with Viking recipes that could be made using these ingredients.

Alternatively, students could research possible Viking recipes online. Students could choose one or two of these recipes and make them with the students in class.
