Meet Rich and find out about his life as an archaeologist.

What is your job?

I’m an archaeologist at the Scottish Crannog Centre on Loch Tay. My job is to find out about the Iron Age people who used to live here 2500 years ago, and talk to visitors who come here what we’ve discovered.

What’s it like being an archaeologist?

It’s a fantastic job. Tourists from all over the world come to visit us, and every day is busy. I love showing them artefacts that have been discovered by archaeologists here, and telling them about the past.

I helped to build this crannog (it took us three years!) and I get to demonstrate Iron Age crafts and cookery to our visitors. I wear clothes like people would have worn in the Iron Age to help people imagine what it would have been like.

I love everything about my job except being outside in bad weather.

I can 100% tell you I do not wish I was around at the time of crannogs. We have it so much more comfortable today!

How do you become an archaeologist?

The most important thing is to have an interest in history.

If you’ve got a passion for finding out about the past, you’re on the right track to becoming an archaeologist. You can go straight from school to train as an archaeologist apprentice or do a course at university, but you don’t have to.

All sorts of people end up working in archaeology, like jewellers and welders – because their expert skills can help us understand more about how people lived and worked in the past.
