The total amount of the hoard is £2 3s 6d, around 65 days pay for a foot soldier.The battle of Naseby was fought on the morning of the 14th June 1645. In the open fields of that small Northamptonshire village, parliament's New Model Army destroyed the main field army of King Charles I. After nearly three years of conflict, this was the decisive battle of the Civil War. The Sibbertoft Hoard of 44 coins was discovered 1500 metres north of the site, on the Royalist side of the battlefield. The coins were found scattered through the soil and may have either been buried by a soldier before going into battle or trampled into the ground during the pillaging of the baggage train after the battle.

I have listened to the story of these coins, but I was surprised to hear that one had part of the name Joyce on it. As a family historian I have not come accross this name as a fore-name before 20th century. The surname is very common in Rutland and going back in time it was often spelt 'joice'.
