The development of Scunthorpe from five small agricultural villages to an industrial town started in 1859 when Roland Winn discovered the Frodingham Ironstone Bed. This unique geological feature gave the town its iron and steel industry. Without it the prosperity of what was essentially an agricultural area might never have come about. Scunthorpe may never have become a town, remaining instead five small villages.
After the discovery of the ironstone, the years 1860-1875 saw tremendous development with 19 blast furnaces being built by five different companies. The first was the Trent Ironworks, and this tobacco jar is made from the first iron cast at the Trent Ironworks in 1864.
Since then, Scunthorpe Iron and Steel has been used in construction throughout the world.
