The Carne Cross

A stone cross to mark the deaths of 58 men from the Gloucestershire Regiment in the Korean War.

The Korean war lasted from 1950-1953Colonel J.P. Carne was commanding officer of the 1st Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment. He won the VC while on active service in Korea. He and his men fought the Chinese on many occasions and he was in command of the regiment in the stand against the communist forces at The Battle of Imjin River. Carne was taken prisoner along with 700 of his men and while in solitary confinement he used a nail to carve a stone cross, which is now on display in Gloucester Cathedral. Colonel Carne was also tortured.
