This is the Christmas Tree acquired in 1931 by a relative in regard to the first christmas with their first child, a son.
The family lived in two rooms in a tenament, unemployment was widespread,
and wages were very low. There was no benefit system, and this tree was
the only sign of joy the couple could afford.
The tree is approximately 35cms in height, with a spread of
approx. 12cms wide with green material making the branches around
a wooden centre pole and wooden square box base.
When bought it cost 2s6d. or twelve and a half pence.
This was nearly a third of the weekly wage of the couple who owned it,
which indicates the emotion involved in regard to their new family and
illustrates the pleasure it brought.
It was bought because it was practical and despite the economic conditions and in regard to the growing child, a real christmas tree was not possible
too expensive and an artifical tree would last.
The tree is now, alittle worn, but 79 years old.
