This cup comes from the later part of the 19th century.
It has importance as it relates to a time, over a century ago, when travel - even to a relatively mundane place such as Selby - was important enough to be recorded by a relatively high quality souvenir such as this china cup.
The railway web had spread so wide that longer-distance excursions to destinations like Selby, possibly for a special bank holiday market, had become possible, but such excursions were still seen as "special events"
Apparently this was purchased on such a visit by a gentleman who gave it to his niece as a keepsake.
