After the failure of the Chartist petition's MP Fergus O'conner came up with the National Land Company.
The idea was to settle the working classes on the land with a cottage and the tools to become self sufficient.
Residents would then be entitled to the vote.
The chartist's were given seeds and plants to set them up for their first year on the land, it is believed the Monthly rose was given to all Dodford settlers.
