Spinning Wheel Ashford Joy

Contributed by The Devon Show

Spinning Wheel Ashford Joy

Mary bought her modern spinning wheel from New Zealand. It's called the Ashford Joy as it is named after the person who made it. It's interesting that Ashford Joy lived in Ashburton New Zealand and her wheel has been used in Asburton Devon. Spinning was a cottage industry when people utilised every part of an animal and nothing was wasted. Spinning was initially for clothing and warmth. Now it's a country craft, a hobby and form of relaxation. the majority of Mary's work is for decoration and soft furnishings.
