Self-Assembly was made by Philippa M Brock in 2008 and acquired by the Crafts Council Collection in 2010.
Brock is a member of the Textiles Futures Research Group. This piece is one of a series of 12 works that were the result of collaboration between textile and fashion designers from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Science Nobel Laureates.
The Self Assembly series was inspired by Sir Aaron Klug's 1982 discovery of the 3D structure of viruses through 2D X-ray methods of study. The woven jacquard piece using multiple warp beds means that a 2D method creates a 3D fabric so echoing Klug's method of discovery.
