These two 3D stars are examples of the skilled and patient work of women and as such should be available for all to admire. These beautiful 'pin cushions' have now been accepted by the Embroider's Guild so that they may go on show. I am very aware that women's art and crafts have been marginalised through the ages. Needlework does not even have have the
name of the artist on it.
My mother had owned the antique 'star pin cushion' for many years and I cannot remember for how long or where it came from. She always assumed that it was a pin cushion as it could be used as such, though there is nothing to say that it was not made purely as a piece of art. It is an amazing technical achievement.
In her early seventies my mother decided to see if she could replicate the star and with time and patience achieved a beautiful copy of the original. I admired it of course, but it is only since her death that I really come to realise her true brilliance and all she did, in all of her life and I am only sorry I didn't really acknowledge my mother's skill in
making the second star. I call it the Lily Star, after her.
