Laura and Bernard Ashley started their company in the 1950s designing and making headscarves, tea towels and placemats.The Laura Ashley Company was set up by Laura and Bernard Ashley in the 1950s, after spells in London and Kent, they settled in Carno in Mid-Wales in 1967, from where they produced their extensive range of clothing and later home furnishings. Laura Ashley was the main creator of the companyâ??s designs taking her inspiration from Victorian motifs especially flowers. Indeed during the 1970s and 80s the company became famous for its many floral prints which would be used to make dresses for women and children as well as in wall papers, curtain material and other household items. The company opened shops in Britain and Europe and in the 1980s made it to America and Australia and was indeed a global company. On her 60th birthday in 1985 Laura Ashley fell down a flight of stairs, she was rushed to hospital but died ten days later. She was buried in the local churchyard in Carno and is still held in high esteem by the local people in the area.
