A penny farthing is a nickname for an old fashioned bicycle which had a large wheel at the front and a much smaller one behind. The penny and farthing were coins familiar to your grandparents and were worth much less than the pennies we have today. The height of the bicycle meant the rider needed help to climb aboard, and once they were up there it was hard to keep their balance.
