During the First and Second World Wars and due to the high concentration of the military on the Isle of Sheppey, permits or passports were issued to local residents for entry to and exit from the Isle of Sheppey.
The permits were checked by Armed Guards at the Kingsferry Bridge and Sheerness Dockyard, this high security gave the island the nickname of 'Barbed Wire Island'.
Visitors passes could also be obtained by the registered resident who would have to visit their local police station and request a pass that would need to be approved by the Lieut.-Colonel, Chief Constable of Kent.
