Kabuki Review Magazine February 1930

This Kabuki Review magazine was published at the beginning of the period of Japan's militarization in the lead up to the 2nd World War. It contains one of the few photographs of a female kabuki actress, Ichikawa K?bai, from Ichikawa Shojo (Girl's) Kabuki, who was the niece of the eldest daughter, Suisen II, of Ichikawa Danj?r? IX. It also contains a miniature, fold out woodblock by Toyokuni called a kuchi e, most of which were produced specifically for publications, of the Iwai Kumesaburo III and Ichikawa Danjuro VIII (who committed suicide in 1854) in the play Imoseyama Onna Teikin (Imoseyama, an example of womanly virtue). It also contains many photos of Kabuki actors of the day; Ichimura Uzaemon XV, Onoe Baiko VI, Ichikawa Chusha VIII, Ichimura Kakitsu VII, Sawamura Sojuro VII, Suketakaya Takajo V, and Ichimura Kamez? III. The plays shown in the photos are Izayoi Seishin by the eminent Kabuki playwright Kawatake Mokuami, Genji Monogatari 'Aoishikan' based on the Noh play Nonomiya, Imoseyama Onna Teikin (Imoseyama, an example of womanly virtue) and an unusual play celebrating the shrine of Kotohira with actors playing the parts of Shinto Kami or Gods
