Football card

Contributed by Robert baines

From 1885 football cards invented by my Great Grandfather were collected by young boys and girls. They swapped them and received prizes for most collected in a dictated time span. They also used them for games. It was a craze which lasted from it's inception to about the mid 1920's. The cards were the forerunners of cigarette cards and latterly modern day football cards. The cards dipicted sports clubs, rugby, cricket, football etc from local towns and villages as well as those of sporting and national heroes. More than 20 million were produced.
