The dramatist Richard Curtis is best known for making Rom-Coms (romantic comedies). Hits include Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, and Bridget Jones's Diary. He's also devoted much of his adult life to combating poverty. He founded Comic Relief in the 1980s. The charity has since raised millions of pounds to help the world's poor (most notably in Africa). His chosen object is the single version of Do They Know It's Christmas? by Band Aid. The record was first released in 1984, and became the Christmas number one. Richard says the record changed his life, and led to a sea change in thinking in how people looked at poverty, and the plight of others (less fortunate than themselves). So much so that regular efforts are now made to help the world's poor (e.g. Comic Relief), with western Governments finally looking at what they can do to address the problem (e.g. debt relief).
