Mossley Mill at Newtownabbey near Belfast was a 19th Century flax mill complex. The former mill now houses a complex of buildings including a new museum telling the story of the mill and the people who worked there from the 1800s through to the mill closure in 1996.
This mill bell would have been rung to start the day. The mill gates would then close and those workers not inside the gate would be locked out. Lateness was penalised by docking of pay.
