Female farm workers wore these bonnets when Queen Victoria was on the throne. This bonnet is native to Lincolnshire. It is a type of head covering worn by female farm workers during the Victorian period when they were out in the fields doing such jobs as picking potatoes. Such bonnets were handmade and each area had its own particular design. The Bonnet served as a 'sun hat' with lengths of fabric extending to the shoulders to protect the neck.
During the Victorian period North Lincolnshire was largely an agricultural area, exporting its products to the rest of the country. The bonnet represents the important role women have played in agricultural throughout history.
