Color Photo of Nazi-Occupied Austria

This photograph was taken in 1938 during a cycle tour of Nazi occupied Austria by my Great Uncle Earnest Telfer. The location is Zell-am-Zee in Austria and I think captures a certain blind innocence of the horror unfolding in Europe. The woman going about her daily routine, the man looking out of the window and the scene dominated by the Nazi flags.

My great uncle undertook a cycle tour in 1938 just after the Anschluss. I have attempted to trace the route and have cycled large parts of it myself in the 1980's before I knew about the photographs. Many of the photographs show Nazi banners, but also capture a time lost. I have identified several of the locations, but some remain illusive. I'd love some day to try and re-create the cycle trip he and his friends made to see the places again. I have found out the names of descendants of one of the people in another photograph (a girl in a hotel)who are still living locally.
