This seachest was made by/for my Great-Grandfather Henry Shave, a marine engineer and went with him on all his voyages to contain both his clothes,personal posetions and tools. It has an engraved plaque upon its lid with his name inscribed. It is I beleive typical of the kind of chests used by Officers in the Merchant Navy in Victorian & Edwardian times, and although fairly cruedely made, were more than adequate for the job. It was then passed to "Pop" my Grandfather and another Henry or Harry Shave who was a Marine Engineer who worked on Banana Boats for Fyffes the Banana importers for many years, based in Liverpool and Southampton. The Banana boats had a special place in British & Jamaican history, opening up the tourist trade to teh Bahamas & Caribean.

My mother inherited it and used it as a blanket box,showing how such chests were frequently used in the home, once they had outgrown their original purpose. and it has now come to me and is used as a repository for items relating to the family history.
