Mr Nuzair Hasan of Luton donated a delicately embroidered, fine silk muslin waistcoat and tunic to Museums Luton. The family believe these clothes were worn by Mr Hasan's grandfather around 1850. The clothes were worn on special occasions or when performing Court duties and the tunic was dipped in the Holy water of Zam Zam when his Grandfather performed the Hajj. Mr Hasan's grandfather is thought to have been involved with the Resistance Movement (Indian Mutiny), which started from Meerut before spilling over to the Capital of the Moguls at Delhi and beyond. For three years he disappeared returning home only after the hostilities had finished and things had quietened down. At the time of Partition in 1947, Mr Hasan's family fled from India to Pakistan - the only items they took were these clothes, a portion of cloth from the covering of the Ka'aba in Mecca and short stories written for various Urdu magazines by his mother. When Mr Hasan came to live in England, he brought these precious items with him.
