The Holy Bible was purchased on 22 September 1916 as a gift to my Great Uncle Charles John Barton, serving with the Royal Medical Corp, Basra, Iraq.
The purchaser was his friend, Ibrahim, and he bought it from the Armenian Shop in Basra.
I believe this is an indication of the friendship between different nationalities, and religions, in a time of war. Iraq has seen much turbulence over the centuries and it is warming to find such a friendship.
Charles John Barton subsequently died 05 November 1917 and is buried in the British War Graves site in Basra.
Written, in Arabic, on the inside of the first blank page is:
"This book was bought from the Armenian shop in Basra, Iraq on the 22 September 1916. It was given as a souvenir for love of my neighbour.
Ibrahim"
As indicated below it was printed by the Oxford University Press for the British & Foreign Bible Society, 146 Queen Victoria Street, London. It was then obviously shipped to Iraq where Ibrahim purchased it.
The translation was carried out for me by my friend, Bassam Jabr who lives in Jiddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
